Why Singapore cars: the COE cycle, spec levels, mileage and price versus Japan

How the ten-year COE creates a steady supply of low-mileage, high-spec used cars, and where Singapore stock beats Japan and the UK on price for the same trim.

The ten-year cycle

Every car in Singapore needs a Certificate of Entitlement (COE) that lasts ten years. Renewing it costs tens of thousands of dollars, so most owners deregister at the end of the ten years and the car must leave the country. The stock you see here is that flow: cars first registered 2015 to 2017 today, 2016 to 2018 next year.

Because the timing is set by the COE and not by the car's condition, good cars are exported alongside average ones. Sorting them is our job; the photos and wear shots are how you check it.

Mileage

Singapore is 50 km across. Typical annual mileage is 8,000 to 12,000 km, so a ten-year-old car shows 45,000 to 80,000 km. Odometers are recorded by LTA at every inspection, and consignment units are marked so you know which readings are owner-declared.

Spec levels

  • Leather, sunroof, reverse camera and parking sensors are standard on most continental cars sold here.
  • Japanese crossovers (Harrier, Vezel, X-Trail, Forester, Outlander) are the local high-spec versions, often with hybrid drivetrains.
  • All cars are right-hand drive and serviced at authorised dealers during the warranty years.

Price versus Japan and the UK

Japan exports huge volumes of budget cars; Singapore exports fewer cars with higher trim. For the same model year and trim, a Singapore unit is often cheaper FOB than a Japanese one because the owner is selling on a deadline, not a market. Freight to East Africa is comparable; Singapore is a few days closer to Mombasa and Dar es Salaam.

The UK has right-hand drive stock too but with higher mileage, salt corrosion and a weaker document trail for import inspection.

What to check on any Singapore car

  • Registration month and year against your country's age rule. Our price block does this automatically.
  • Wear photos: kerb rash, stone chips and interior wear are photographed on purpose.
  • Consignment badge: odometer and supplier data are as declared.
